” From Botticelli to Matisse. Faces and figures ” is a wonderful art exhibition, staged in the awesome Palazzo della Gran Guardia in Verona. Around 100 very important paintings will show you the great journey made by the portrait and the figurative painting, from 15th century to the late 20th century. Here some of the famous painters hosted: Giacometti, Van Eyck, Antonello da Messina, Memling, Botticelli, Mantegna, Bellini, Tiepolo, Cranach, Pontormo, Rubens, Caravaggio, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Velázquez, El Greco, Modigliani Goya … up to the Impressionists as Van Gogh, Manet and the 20th century artists, such as Munch, Matisse, Picasso and Bacon.
The first section (Religious Sentiment. Grace and Ecstasy) focuses on the life of Christ; the second section (The Nobility of the Portrait) is based on the portraits of sovereigns, nobles, doges, burgeois and clerics; The third section (The Everyday Portrait) shows a deeper concept of the portrait, here more spiritual and investigating. The fourth section (The Twentieth Century. The Uneasy Gaze) focuses on the big changes made by the twentieth century painting…Impressionists, Expressionists, Cubists… the portraits of our times.
