Among the many Italian oddities, this little City is surely a wonderful one. Palmanova is a fortified City located close to Udine, in Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. The fortress City has a really weird shape, its polygonal plant has a nine-tips star shape. It was founded by the Venetian Republic in 1593 AD, pratically inside the Austrian territory, to defend the Venetian’s Reign borders. All in the City was planned to make of it a real war machine, from the lenght of its sides to the number of bastions to fit to its cannons long-range. The star shape was initially surrounded by 2 fortification circles with a moat, then a third wall was added. Between the 1797 AD to 1914 AD the City was repeatedly conquered by Austrians and French, who constantly stole it one another until it was annexed to Italian Reign in 1866 AD. In 1960 AD Palmanova was proclaimed National Monument.
