The ” Palestra Grande ” of Pompei is a rectangular and vast green area surrounded by porches on three of four sides with a pool at its center, dating back to the Augustan Age. This area was often used by youth organizations of gymnasts dear to the worshiped Emperor. Externally there is double row of plane trees alongside the porches. There is a latrine on the south side which was cleaned by a little channel that brought the pool’s water and some of the walls, destroyed by an earthquake and by the eruption, have been rebuilt in brickwork.
